Getting Around

Riding the Public Bus in Grand Cayman

A comprehensive guide to using the public bus system in Grand Cayman — including routes, fares, schedules and practical tips.

Grand Cayman has a reasonably well-developed public mini-bus system operating seven days a week. While it is not a large-scale city network with fixed timetables, it provides an affordable and practical way to travel between districts, particularly along the island’s main roads.

How the Public Bus System Works

The system consists of privately operated minibuses that run along fixed routes connecting all districts of Grand Cayman.

  • Each bus displays a route number inside a coloured circle on the front and rear.
  • “Public Bus” is written along the side of the vehicle.
  • Most buses carry 14–29 passengers.

All routes begin and end at the bus depot in central George Town, which serves as the main transport hub. A Public Transport Inspector is typically on duty there from 7am–7pm (Monday–Friday, excluding public holidays).

Although there are approximately 125 designated bus stops and shelters, the most common way to board is simply to wave down a bus along its route. If a driver beeps at you, they are checking whether you would like to board.

Before getting on, confirm with the driver that the bus is travelling to your intended destination.

To exit the bus, inform the driver where you would like to get off.

Operating Hours

Bus Depot Hours:

  • Monday–Friday: 5:00am–7:00pm

Evening Service:

  • Limited service typically operates until around 11:00pm

Weekends:

  • Limited, unscheduled service
  • Not ideal for visitors with tight schedules

While buses operate seven days a week, weekend services can be inconsistent and less predictable.

Bus Fares

Fares are distance-based and paid directly to the driver. Approximate rates:

  • CI$2.00 for short journeys (e.g., George Town to West Bay or Bodden Town)
  • CI$3.50 for longer routes such as East End or North Side
  • CI$8.00 for routes extending beyond Hutland Road, including Rum Point and Cayman Kai

As a general rule:

  • Any trip crossing the Frank Sound junction costs CI$3.50
  • Journeys stopping before Frank Sound cost CI$2
  • Trips beyond Hutland Road cost CI$8
Sample Route Fares KYD USD
George Town – West Bay $2 $2.50
George Town – Bodden Town $2 $2.50
George Town – East End $3.50 $4.37
George Town – North Side $3.50 $4.37
George Town – Cayman Kai $8 $10
George Town – Walkers Road and Olympic Way $2 $2.50

For a small additional fee (usually CI$1–CI$3), some drivers may deviate slightly from their route if feasible, though this is at the driver’s discretion.

Important Travel Considerations

While the bus system is generally reliable along main corridors, particularly between George Town and Seven Mile Beach, service to more distant areas such as North Side and East End may be less predictable.

There have been reports that buses travelling toward Bodden Town and Frank Sound may occasionally turn back to George Town rather than continuing around the island if passenger numbers are low. If you are travelling to or from more remote districts — especially later in the afternoon — consider having a backup transport option.

Accessibility

The public bus operates as a route-based system and is not designed for door-to-door service.

While drivers may occasionally assist with luggage, minibuses may not have adequate space for portable wheelchairs or passengers requiring specialised mobility support. Drivers may also be unable to leave the vehicle at every stop to assist passengers.

For travellers with mobility limitations, taxis — including wheelchair-accessible vehicles — are generally recommended for a more comfortable and practical experience.

Final Tips for Visitors

  • Carry small bills in Cayman Islands Dollars.
  • Confirm the route before boarding.
  • Do not rely on strict timetables.
  • Plan carefully if travelling to remote districts.

The public bus system offers an affordable way to explore Grand Cayman, particularly along major commercial and residential corridors. For maximum flexibility, however, visitors may prefer combining bus travel with taxis or rental vehicles.
