GETTING AROUND
IN THE CAYMAN ISLANDS

Your complete guide to transportation in the Cayman Islands — including flights between islands, car rentals, driving tips, public buses, taxis and alternative transport options.

The Cayman Islands are a British Overseas Territory in the western Caribbean, made up of three islands: Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. With well-developed infrastructure and a strong tourism sector, getting around is straightforward and convenient.

Whether you’re taking a short inter-island flight, driving along the coast, cycling through the quieter eastern districts or catching a ferry across the North Sound, there are transportation options to suit different budgets and travel styles.

Getting to the Sister Islands

Daily flights connect Grand Cayman with Cayman Brac and Little Cayman via Owen Roberts International Airport.

  • Grand Cayman → Cayman Brac: approximately 30–40 minutes
  • Grand Cayman → Little Cayman: approximately 20–30 minutes
  • Little Cayman → Cayman Brac: approximately 15–25 minutes

Inter-island flights operate multiple times per day, making it easy to explore more than one island during your stay.

Getting Around in Grand Cayman

Grand Cayman offers the widest range of transport options. If you plan to explore beaches, attractions and the quieter eastern districts, renting a car provides the greatest flexibility. If you’re staying within a single area — such as Seven Mile Beach — taxis or public buses may be a more economical and convenient choice.

Rental Cars

To rent a car in the Cayman Islands, drivers must be at least 21 years old, hold a valid driver’s licence and provide a credit card for the security deposit. Rates vary depending on vehicle type and season, with peak travel periods commanding higher prices.

Booking in advance, reviewing rental agreements carefully and ensuring adequate insurance coverage are strongly recommended.

Choosing the Right Vehicle

  • When selecting a rental vehicle, consider the following:
  • Choose a vehicle size appropriate for your group and luggage.
  • Fuel prices are significantly higher than in the United States.
  • During periods of heavy rain, some roads may temporarily flood, making low or open-top vehicles less practical.
  • While electric rentals are currently limited, selecting a fuel-efficient vehicle is a more environmentally conscious choice.

Driving in Cayman

Driving in the Cayman Islands is on the left-hand side of the road. Visitors unfamiliar with this system should exercise caution, particularly at roundabouts.

Roads are generally well maintained, though ongoing construction and diverse driving habits require attentive and defensive driving. Hands-free devices are required for mobile phone use while driving; all other phone use is prohibited by law.

Following posted speed limits and road signage is essential for safety.

Buses & Taxis

Grand Cayman bus routes

Public Buses

The public bus system offers a cost-effective alternative to car rental. Routes primarily operate along major corridors, particularly between George Town and Seven Mile Beach.

Fares typically begin around CI$2–CI$2.50 one way, with round-trip fares around CI$5, depending on distance. While affordable, buses may not follow strict timetables and operate more flexibly than in larger cities.

Taxis

Taxis provide direct and convenient transportation throughout Grand Cayman. Fares are regulated but not metered. It is advisable to confirm the fare before beginning your journey. Some services offer app-based fare estimates.

Taxis can be hailed in busy areas or arranged through hotels and transport providers.

Ride Share

App-based ride-sharing services have recently become available on Grand Cayman, offering another flexible transportation option. These services provide upfront pricing and convenient booking via smartphone apps, appealing to visitors seeking modern, on-demand transport.
